The Balkan corridor remains one of the most heavily used overland routes in Europe, connecting Central and Western Europe with Turkey, Greece and the Middle East. Whether you are a truck driver, a tourist or an expatriate making a seasonal journey, knowing the real-time border situation before you leave can save hours — and in peak season, sometimes an entire day.
Serbia sits at the crossroads of four major European routes. Horgoš (E75 north toward Budapest) and Batrovci (E70 west toward Zagreb) are the two busiest international crossings. During summer weekends, Horgoš can see queues of 2–4 hours for passenger cars and 6–10 hours for trucks. The official AMSS portal at amss.org.rs publishes real-time waiting times updated every 30 minutes, alongside live camera feeds for most major crossings. Before any journey north or west, checking AMSS should be standard practice.
The southern route through Preševo toward North Macedonia and Greece (E75 south corridor) is equally important for freight traffic. This crossing handles a large proportion of Turkey-bound and Greece-bound heavy goods vehicles, and summer congestion regularly exceeds eight hours for trucks.
Since Croatia joined the Schengen Area in January 2023, the border experience between Croatia and its Schengen neighbors has become seamless. However, Croatia–Serbia (Bajakovo/Batrovci) and Croatia–Bosnia crossings remain full international borders with customs checks. The Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) maintains a comprehensive portal at hak.hr with live camera streams and queue estimates for all major crossings. For the Slovenia corridor, DARS provides similar coverage at dars.si.
Hungary requires a digital vignette (ematrica) for motorway use — purchase online at ematrica.hu before entering. Hungarian Police publish live border cameras at police.hu, covering Röszke/Horgoš (the main Hungary–Serbia crossing) and all other international entry points. Trucks using Tompa/Kelebija as an alternative to Röszke typically experience shorter waits, but the road quality is lower.
The Evzonoi/Gevgelija crossing on E75 is the main entry point into Greece from the north. During Orthodox Easter and the July–August holiday season, this crossing is consistently among the busiest in the entire Balkans. The Promachonas/Kulata crossing connects Bulgaria and Greece and carries significant freight traffic. For Turkey-bound vehicles, Kapitan Andreevo is the primary Bulgarian exit point — truck queues of 6–12 hours are common during peak periods, and drivers should plan accordingly.
Montenegro's coastal crossings, particularly Debeli Brijeg toward Dubrovnik, become severely congested from July to mid-August. Queues of 1–3 hours are standard, and weekend mornings (particularly Saturdays from 6–10am) see peak volume. The Montenegrin Ministry of Interior (MUP) publishes basic border information, but for real-time conditions, the Croatian HAK portal on the other side of the border is often more detailed.

Avoid Fridays 14:00–20:00 and Sunday evenings. Tuesday–Thursday mornings are consistently fastest at Horgoš, Batrovci and Preševo.
